SOLAR BATTERY - IS IT RIGHT FOR YOUR SYSTEM ?

August 7, 2019

This article discusses the advantages of having a solar battery added into your design.

SOLAR BATTERIES

Overview

Solar batteries have recently entered the Texas market and are a great add-on to your home solar system design. They provide multiple benefits and an added layer of security in the event of power outages. Texas is experiencing more outages due to weather and the population growth straining the grid (1).

Battery Benefits

Black out protection: During an outage, a solar system with a battery would ensure your home is functional both day and night. During the day the panels will power the home, and at night the battery will provide the power needed to stay comfortable.

Back up generator replacement: As seen during Hurricane Harvey, those with generators were much more comfortable, although they had the challenge of maintaining a fuel supply and creating noise pollution. These generators also range 3,000-10,000$ and take up a large storage space. The solar battery offers similar comfort without fuel, noise, and taking up garage space.

Protection: Have the confidence that you will always have critical devices powered. Things such as refrigerator, medical devices, lighting, and security systems will stay powered to keep you safe and comfortable.

Limitations

While a great add-on, the battery does have some limitations. This first is that you must select which circuits the backup battery will power (4-6 circuits). Some choose to have the battery dedicated to a single room keeping it fully powered, and other decide to spread it to different areas of the home. The second limitation is that the battery has an estimated life of 9 hours if being fully drawn though can be extended with conservative use.

Conclusion

A battery is a great addition to a solar system for your home. It adds another layer of protection and comfort in the event of outages.
